Prince Lir is the kind and friendly son of the dour King Haggard. He is entranced by the beauty of the Lady Amalthea (the unicorn) and seeks to win her heart. He confronts dragons, giants, ogres, terrible tasks, and all sorts of great deeds to impress her, but none of them can turn her heart towards him. In his own words, "...For her sake, I've become a hero, but my great deeds mean nothing to her!"

Eventually, he turns to poetry and song, winning her over with gentle words and an effort to help her forget her frightening dreams and past. It is a beautiful and fragile love.

The movie's screenplay is written by Peter S. Beagle, adapted from the book of the same name.
